I have talked with lots of people about Cloth Diapers and I know one frustration of many people that are just getting into cloth is the “Lingo” that the cloth diapering community uses. There is nothing worse than trying to find information just to have it all in a secret code!

Here is your Lingo 101 crash course:

CD: CD stands for Cloth Diapers. So we have CD’ers and CD’ing, cloth diaper-ers and cloth diaper-ing.

Stash: a stash is the collection of cloth diapers that a person has. Some stashes are small and just fill the needs of the family, and some stashes are literally a collection of cloth diapers.

Closures: the way a diaper is done up to stay on baby, types include: snap, velcro, pin, snappie, or wrap style cover.

OS diaper: One Size diaper, made to fit all sizes of kids from birth to potty training.

AIO: All in one diaper, a diaper that is diaper and cover in one, with snap or velcro closures.

AI2: All in two diaper, a diaper that is a diaper and cover with and insert added in, with snap or velcro closures.

Pocket: a diaper that is a shell with a pocket that you stuff with an absorbent insert, with snap or velcro closures.

Fitted: an absorbent, breathable diaper that needs a cover, with snap, velcro or pin closures.

Flat: a flat square of absorbent fabric that you can fold into a diaper, requires pins or some other method of closure.

Prefold: a flat diaper that has been “pre-folded” and sewn so the middle is more absorbent, requires pins or other method of closure.

Contour diaper: a prefold that has been sewn into a contoured shape to fit more easily without all the folding, requires pins of other method of closure.

Covers: a covering for a fitted, contoured, flat or prefold diaper that is usually fleece, PUL (polyurethane laminate: waterproof fabric) or wool.

Wrap: style of cover that wraps around the baby like the diaper holding the diaper in place, has either snap of velcro closure.

Soaker or Longies: Pull up covers usually fleece or wool, longies are pant style covers.

Insert or Booster: more absorbency layers you can simply add to the diaper.

WAHM: Work at home Mom

Sposies: disposable diapers

Diaper Sprayer: a sprayer you attach to your toilet to spray off your diapers.

So now that we have the basic lingo let’s talk why cloth is better…

I am biased I know, but I have three reasons I cloth diapered. I will share them with you.

Eco-Friendly:

This one is kind of obvious I think. Pro-disposable advocates have for years used the water argument. That the amount of water used to wash cloth diapers is is as hard on the environment as the production and disposal of disposable diapers. So, how about some numbers…

It is estimated that every year 2 billion tons of urine, feces, plastic and paper are added to landfills. Also did you know that it takes around 80, 000 pounds of plastic and over 200, 000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers that just the babies in the us use. Now I know some disposables are presented as biodegradable, but in order for this process to work them must be exposed to the sun. This does not happen since we cover our landfills. It can take several hundred years for them to decompose, and some of the plastics never do decompose.

As to the claim that we are wasting water with flushing the waste and washing cloth diapers, did you realize that the water that we use to flush and to wash our diaper is sent into the waste-water plants and then treated. It is then much more environmentally friendly than dumping untreated soiled disposable diapers into a landfill.

So we agree they are better for the environment, how about your baby?

Healthy Lifestyle:

In our lifestyles today we are becoming more and more aware of the chemicals and such that are being added to everything around us. Our food, our water, our kids’ toys, and even our pesticides and fertilizers. We are demanding that we want more organic lifestyles. We want things to be healthier and better for us. Why then should this not carry over to the diapers we put on our baby’s bum? Does your baby get rashes? Most babies get rashes from one thing or another. There are a few things that are added to disposable diapers that are not very healthy or at all natural. Dyes, sodium polyacrylate (the super absorbent gel), and dioxin, which is a by-product of bleaching paper are just some thing found in disposable diapers. Also a big concern is Sodium polyacrylate which has been linked in the past to toxic shock syndrome and allergic reactions, this is no longer allowed in Tampons, but is still used in disposable diapers.

Some of the problems reported to the CPA (Consumer Protection Agency) regarding disposable diapers include, chemical burns, noxious chemical and insecticide odors, babies pulling disposables apart and putting pieces of plastic into their noses and mouth and choking on them, plastic melting onto the skin, and ink staining the skin. That sounds just dandy huh? I put cloth diapers on my babies because I knew exactly what was going on their bum, and I knew exactly what was in the diapers. I also had total control over what was used on them in the cleaning process. Did you know that disposable diapers do not have to list their ingredient lists? They don’t want you to know what they put in them, what chemicals you are bringing into your home and putting on their precious little bums. Did that all sound like mumbo jumbo? Well if it did, then this last sentence is all you need to remember from this section. In the end cloth diapers worn and changed regularly are simply better for your baby’s adorable little behind.

So if this all isn’t enough what about the cost? Is it really cheaper to cloth diaper?

Cost of Cloth Diapers VS Disposable Diapers:

Disposable diaper estimates run between $60 to $80 a month depending on the brand of choice. That is between $750-$960 a year for diapering one child… how many of you have or will have more than one in diapers? I did! I have 6 kids that is $7, 500! Can you imagine that? Did I just want to throw away that much money? You better believe I did NOT!

So how much will a stash of cloth diapers cost you? And do you really save money?

There are so many brands of diapers out there and the the cost is differing. From cheap Prefolds at $12 for a 6 pack to Fitted’s that will cost you upwards of $40 a diaper. I make and sell Cloth Diapers and my diapers are in the middle of the range of the cost of Cloth Diapers. My diapers cost $23. 50 a diaper. We will use the cost of my Nifty Nappy Cloth Diapers to figure out the cost of a stash.

20 diapers = $470

3 woolie wrap covers = $75

2 longie wool covers = $40

diaper pail = $3 (Ace 2 gallon bucket)

Diaper sprayer = $29 – $40

TOTAL: $580-$600

This was my stash minus the diaper sprayer, which i did survive all 10 years of cloth diapering without! I know that that seems like a lot! BUT it is less than you would spend for one year of disposable diapers. And you can diaper that child through all diapering years with that stash. PLUS other children that follow as well! The “care of” does add a bit of a cost. With some extra batches of laundry a week and the extra electricity. I just convinced my sister to use cloth diapers and she is on her last child. She now wishes she had used them the whole time. She says that she honestly is not doing more laundry with cloth than she was doing before. She says my cloth diapers contain messes that used to blow right up and out of the disposable diapers. She has to wash the baby’s actual clothes less because there are less blowouts which in turn has made her baby clothes last longer also.

I diapered two kiddos in cloth with 20 diapers washing every other day. I also used the same set of diapers for my four youngest children. I did one wash in hot water and then hung them out to dry as much as possible cutting down on the cost of drying… since the sun is free! So to me the cost difference was a big part in my decision to cloth diaper.

The maintenance of clothes after buying them is an important aspect of making them last for a good length of time. It doesn’t matter how much it cost you to get the clothes, if the maintenance is not properly done, it’s a waste. So whether your clothes are designer wears of normal wears, you don’t want to overlook their maintenance.

The normal system is to wash clothes as soon as they are dirty. Usually, people tend to wash their clothes after wearing them once. While this may be a good cleanliness habit, does it augur well for the lifespan of your clothes? A clothes brush is a good way of ensuring that your clothes are kept clean and also enjoy a good lifespan. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating that you wear dirty clothes all around. All I’m saying is that you needn’t wash your clothes so frequently if you have a clothes brush.

Why should you take it easy when it comes to washing your clothes frequently? Well, the more often you wash your clothes, the faster they fade! This is because the more they get soaked in water and detergents, the faster the colors dim and the weaker the fabric gets. A clothes brush will help you keep your clothes clean for those times when all that is needed is just a little bit of brushing. Thus clothes brushes will help you extend the lifespan of your outfits, giving you better value for your money in the long run.

With a clothes brush, and also depending on the use of the clothes, you can wear your clothes two or even three times before washing or dry cleaning them. Perhaps, men will find this more relevant, and even women. A clothes brush is simply something you cannot do without if your lifestyle requires you to wear suits. Hey, are you going to be washing your suits after every wear? Of course not! So a clothing brush is the answer to preserving your suits for a long time.

With a clothes brush, you can wear your suits four, five or six times before dry cleaning them. The secret to doing this is to ensure that you use a clothes brush to gently brush off our suits after taking them off, properly hang them up, and keeping them protected from dust until the next time they are needed.

As many people are trying to get back to natural living, by eating foods that are grown organically, (grown without the use of man-made chemicals), some suggest taking it a step further by wearing clothes that are made of only organic materials. A step in natural living that not only focuses on what we put into our bodies, but also looks at what we put on our bodies, i. e. the fabric in our clothes that touch the largest organ in our bodies, our skin.

There are clothing manufactures today that are producing clothes now that are produced out of organically grown material. Materials such as organically grown cotton, wool, and hemp are some of the materials from which organic clothes are manufactured. Bamboo clothing is even an option for those who are seeking organic apparel.

Organic clothing is an option for those who are trying to live a natural, healthy lifestyle as well as those who are concerned about the well-being of our planet. By wearing clothes organic, people can keep a lot of man-made chemicals from touching their epidermis, such chemicals as formaldehyde, bromines, urea resins and halogens just to name a few. The organic clothes are free from these chemicals, so that your skin is only in contact with the natural material from which your clothes were made. Some of the chemicals that are found in clothes that are not made from organic material can cause an allergic reaction to those who are wearing the clothes. Additionally, when considering about what babies or toddlers wearing next to their skin, chemicals are absorbed through osmosis; there is always the possibility that a child that has a wet diaper might provide enough moisture to allow some chemicals to be absorbed. With organic infant clothes that risk can be minimized. Another example could be a tee-shirt that is soaked in sweat, could that provide enough moisture for osmosis? That is question that may or may not have an answer, but by wearing organic cotton t shirts that risk can be eliminated.

Besides keeping a host of chemicals from making contact with our skin, it has been stated by some that organic clothing is more durable and wears longer than clothes that are constructed from non-organic material. This is an appealing feature to organic clothing; for example, sometimes people have a favorite article of clothes, they like its looks, the way it wears, the way it fits, but then it wears out and is no more, an organic article of clothing that they were fond of may stay with them longer. Additionally, clothes that do not wear out quickly are friendlier to our planet, since they do not end up in a landfill so quick. One might also think of the benefits of hand me downs from organic clothes that are more durable, often baby clothes are handed down, and there could be the possibility of passing down organic toddler clothes down to future generations. One of the durable organic materials that organic clothes are manufactured from is hemp, which from centuries past has been used and known as a tough, resilient material that has been used to make rope, paper, and clothing.

Parents know very well that having a baby is an expensive undertaking. There are the doctor’s visits, nursery items, formula milk, diapers, and all the other baby essentials. It is quite useless to argue in cutting down the baby expenses, not because you wish to spoil your child, but because it simply is inarguable. Your baby needs a lot of things and you want to give him or her the best. Besides, he or she has special needs and as a parent, you are responsible in sustaining them.

One of the most important things that a baby needs is clothing. Clothes are what protect him or her from the overwhelming environment and you would not want to be stingy on purchasing enough of these to protect him or her well. Fortunately, there are some ways on how to cut back on expenses when buying clothes for kids.

For example, whether you are looking for some toddler boy clothing or baby girl clothing, you can opt to buy them from second-hand stores. Sure, some parents may take this negatively because buying second-hand may imply buying low-quality items, but this is not necessarily so, especially when it comes to toddler clothes. A lot of them are still very usable and just need some thorough washing. In fact, some of them are even good as new. Anyway, once they have been washed well, your child would have new clothes to wear and you have new savings in your pocket too. This money can very well go for other expenses such as diapers and baby foods.

There are also toddler boy clothing as well as baby girl clothing available in department store sales. Rummage through the clearance racks and look for toddler clothing which are already out of season. You may be amazed at how low you can buy them now compared to their original prices. However, since your baby will not be wearing them until the next year, make sure that you pick a bigger size than his or her current size. This is to make sure that the clothes will fit just right when the time comes.

Purchasing toddler boy clothing as well as baby girl clothing can also be done wholesale. If you didn’t know yet, there is actually a big market of wholesale out there which are selling designer clothes for babies as well as non-branded ones. Parents need to buy a lot of clothes for their toddlers because they can get dirty and messy very quickly. This is especially true with little boys. They are so active and they never seem to tire of running around and climbing everywhere. If you didn’t invest in a lot of toddler boy clothing, he might end up running around in just his diaper because all his clothes will be in the laundry basket. Thanks to wholesale stores, you can buy baby clothes in bulk at a reasonable price!

Finally, when buying wholesale toddler boy clothing or girl clothing, you should buy different sizes. This is to ensure that your child will have clothes to wear as he or she grows. You must also remember to buy clothes for different seasons. This way, your baby will not run out of appropriate clothes to wear all year-round.

There are several online stores that bring trendy children’s clothing related to current and upcoming fashion trends. Influenced by their parents’ style, children too prefer to dress smart and wear trendy children’s clothing.

Trendy children’s clothing can help make your little one the hippest thing amongst all the other children. If you have a wedding to go to and want to your children to wear formal clothes, there are many adorable party dresses for little girls as well as three-piece suits for little ‘gentlemen. ‘ There are also several regular clothing options for your child.

History

The Civil War and many other social changes created an impact on children’s clothes. Children, until then, would wear miniature versions of the adults’ clothes. The sewing machine along with paper patterns for children’s clothing helped make it easier for parents to clothe their children. Styles for children began to vary as sizing clothes for children began. As transport and other social changes occurred, travel clothes began to be designed.

Dolls also led to changes in children’s clothing as shapes of the dolls were modified to a baby-like shape, leading to demand for similar clothing for the dolls are children. Today, the industry for children clothes is growing, with many wholesale online shops that offer good discounts.

Materials Used

Trendy children’s clothing should be made of high quality material and should not be irritable to children’s sensitive skin. It should be comfortable to wear and should not create any discomfort to the child. You should always choose clothes that have zippers instead of those that have buttons.

Styles To choose

For boys’ there are plenty of choices ranging from jumpers, shorts and tees, jeans, faded denims to the more formal three-piece suits, and shirts and trousers. Similarly, girl’s clothing has everything from layered or collared dresses to gowns and evening wear. The clothes found in adults line of clothing are found in children’s’ line of clothing as well.

An important point to be remembered is that children’s clothing tends to get dirty very quickly while playing. As it is not possible to stop your child from playing, it is better to invest in clothes that will not fade or will not tear while your child is playing.

Every parent wants their kids to wear trendy children’s clothing but it is important to buy sensible clothes so that along with style, you can also offer comfort for your child.

Twenty-five is a big milestone in life, thought Neha. Neha lived a disciplined life and now, has a satisfying job. She presently works as an Assistant Photographer at a well known Wildlife magazine. Neha spends most of her work days travelling to jungles with her three-member team, carefully and patiently waiting for dawn when wild animals come out to hunt, maintaining a cautious distance and  taking amazing pictures. Apart from working with the lens, lighting, and using photography skills, her Profession required Neha to have quick reflexes and amazing planning. Her three-member team included a Nature advisor and Wild animal behavioural specialist, Aruna, twenty-eight and Ibrahim, a thirty-year-old research associate who usually advised, documented, and took care of the overall work. During the course of work, Neha, Aruna, and Ibrahim became close friends. Their next mission was to spend two weeks in a remote village named ‘Kantapur’ two hundred kilometres from Delhi to photograph and research the migration of birds. Neha, the chilled out the young girl she is, packed her bag with three comfort Leggings for Girls, and seven solid women tops. As her travel clothing, she picked a Khaki colored Jeggings for Girls and a polo shirt. Aruna is a dress lover and she packed Jeggings for Girls and a few Girls Dresses as Aruna and Ibrahim planned to throw a surprise pre-Birthday party for Neha.  Ibrahim packed himself two jeans and four T-Shirts and left his house.

Image.jpgImage.jpg

Neha, Aruna, and Ibrahim meet at the Bangalore Railway Station, have their breakfast together and wait for their Rajdhani train to New Delhi. The three are workaholics and extremely Professional; hence they plan their schedule and discuss any hurdles during their twenty-four hour journey.  Four hours pass and their schedule planning is complete as they scheduled it to be. Aruna and Ibrahim secretly plan Neha’s surprise party throughout the journey. Neha’s comfort Jeggings for girls made her very comfortable and she took a nice nap in her allotted compartment. Aruna too slept two nice hours in her Jeggings for Girls. Ibrahim, the book lover, spent his time completing his book by Anita Desai.

The first day in Kantapur went talking to locals and understanding their views on bird migrations. The locals, as always were very friendly and embraced them with love and affection. In the evening of the third day, Neha is surprised when Aruna and Ibrahim gift her two Girls Dresses and a Leggings for Girls for her Birthday. They also surprise her with a cake. Neha feels elated for finding such nice friends at work. They spend their night watching a documentary on the Universe. The next morning, the three-member-team plan to spend three hours in the village school teaching kids about the birds migratory process and let them use their binoculars and cameras. On knowing that Neha shares her birthday with one of the Teachers at school, she gives one of her Girls Dresses and Leggings for Girls to the teacher as a gift. The Teacher accepts hesitantly. Neha learns that although she likes to celebrate her birthday, she believes that real happiness is in sharing the joy.

Ibrahim and Aruna are extremely proud of Neha. They appreciate Neha for her noble cause and thinking and in her decision to choose to share love and happiness than throwing a huge party and generating more nondegradable waste. Neha, Ibrahim, and Aruna make a tradition for their birthdays. They take an oath to give away food, books, and clothing to the ones in need during each of their birthday week. They would also volunteer in a remote location, teach kids and adults and help villagers live a better life. This, they believed gave them more happiness. And most importantly, they were happy to have met each other and to have similar aspirations in life. Soul mates, they called each other!
